Dating app launch checklist

A step-by-step checklist for launching a dating product, ordered the way an operator actually runs it.

This checklist follows the order an operator should actually work in. The single most common launch mistake is doing the later steps before the earlier ones, so resist the urge to jump ahead to acquisition before the core experience holds.

1. Positioning and wedge

  • Define the specific audience, niche, or city you are launching into.
  • Name your unfair advantage in reaching the scarcer side of that market.
  • Write the one-line promise that makes your product different from the giants.

2. Build, buy, or white-label

  • Decide whether technology is your edge (build) or your audience is (white-label).
  • If white-label, confirm the platform solves the cold start with shared liquidity.
  • Confirm native app coverage (Android end to end, iOS path) if you need apps.

3. Solve the cold start

  • Choose a single launch market and a plan to seed the scarcer side first.
  • Decide your density tactic: community, events, invitation, or shared network.
  • Set the experience targets: time to first match, match rate, reply rate.

4. Payments and trust and safety

  • Set up payments with clear billing descriptors and easy, obvious cancellation.
  • Stand up moderation: automated detection plus human review and fast reporting.
  • Add identity and liveness or age-assurance checks where required.

5. App store readiness

  • Build the safety, reporting, and subscription-disclosure features stores require.
  • Confirm accurate store metadata and honest paywall and cancellation flows.
  • Plan for review cycles; do not submit before the safety features exist.

6. Monetization

  • Choose a model (subscription, freemium, credits, or hybrid) that fits behavior.
  • Place the paywall at the moment of highest intent, not a generic upsell.
  • Set up a clear good, better, best plan ladder rather than one confusing plan.

7. Analytics and instrumentation

  • Instrument cohorts, not just blended averages, from day one.
  • Track ARPPU, conversion, churn, CAC payback, and dispute rate.
  • Build the experience dashboard: time to first match, reply rate, early retention.

8. Controlled launch

  • Open to a controlled group, not the whole world, and watch the core metrics.
  • Fix the experience until a new user reliably finds someone worth meeting fast.
  • Only then turn on paid acquisition, and only into a market with real liquidity.
