Indian Matrimonial Platform Implements Gender Gating to Enhance Match Quality

A new study in Information Systems Research reports that a simple change in how profiles are displayed on a large Indian matrimonial platform reduced message overload for women and improved match outcomes, even if it technically forced users to match with a smaller overall pool of possible matches. The intervention, called "gender gating," dramatically improved the quality of connections while reducing the overwhelming volume of messages women typically received.
The Problem of Gender Imbalance in Online Matchmaking
Researchers Sabari Rajan Karmegam of George Mason University, Jui Ramaprasad of the University of Maryland and Anand Gopal of Nanyang Technological University examined congestion caused by gender imbalance. On the platform, the ratio of men to women typically ranged from 60:40 to as high as 90:10. As a result, women received about 40 times as many expressions of interest as men on average.
The volume left many women overwhelmed shortly after joining, which reduced their engagement and raised the risk of them leaving the platform. Men, facing intense competition, also reported lower satisfaction, especially with a large chunk of the women leaving the platform very early and further culling the amount of potential matches they had available. This created a negative cycle affecting both sides of the matching market.

How Gender Gating Works
The team tested an intervention they call "gender gating." Under this design, a woman's profile was shown only to men who met default criteria related to education, income and age that aligned with prevailing social norms. For example, a man in his forties would not see profiles of women more than ten years younger or a couple of years older.
Women could adjust these settings according to their preferences; men could not opt out of the restrictions.
The experiment compared users in two Indian states that were similar in size and socioeconomic indicators but differed in language and culture, reducing the chance of cross-group interference. This careful experimental design ensured that the results could be attributed to the intervention rather than external factors.

Dramatic Results for Match Quality
Results showed that women in the treatment group received 6 percent fewer expressions of interest after the change. Match efficacy, defined as the formation of an open line of communication with a serious prospect, rose by 72 percent overall. Women over 25, a group at prime marriageable age on the platform, recorded a 103 percent improvement in match efficacy and sent 113 percent more expressions of interest themselves.
The intervention increased women's interaction with the platform and raised both the number and quality of matches without apparent harm to male users.
Much of the subsequent courtship occurs offline, so the study does not track progression to marriage. However, the increase in meaningful engagement suggests that the intervention successfully addressed the core problem of overwhelming and often mismatched interest expressions.

Platform Adoption and Future Applications
Following the trial results, the platform expanded gender gating to its full user base. The success of the intervention demonstrates that thoughtful design choices can address market congestion without requiring complex algorithmic solutions. The authors note that similar criteria-based filtering could be relevant in other matching markets where one side faces congestion, though those applications were not tested in the study.
